Domestic Travel for Australians is here

Australians love travelling, whether it’s hitting the slopes in Winter, camping in national parks or taking the boat off the coast for day trips. So when only essential travel restrictions were announced, many had to cancel holidays and overseas travel to stay at home for the last few months. While this wasn’t ideal for our travel bugs, it’s been worth it as the federal government and health authorities are pleased that it’s helped flatten the curve and slow the spread of the virus.

But there’s some great news amidst all the craziness that has been 2020 so far! Domestic travel is back on the cards for Australians itching to take a holiday. While international travel is not going to be an option for the foreseeable future, domestic travel is just as exciting when we live in such a huge and diverse country like Australia.

Domestic travel restrictions in Australia

The Australian Government recently unveiled its easing of restrictions 3-step plan and hopes to open up the country to travel again. However, each state and territory will independently decide when to implement these guidelines.

The 3 step plan for Domestic Travel:

Step 1
– Allow local and regional travel for recreation
– Refer to state and territories governments for border restrictions and biosecurity conditions

Step 2
– Allow local and regional travel for recreation
– Consider allowing interstate recreational travel depending on the situation in each state and territory
– Refer to state and territories governments for border restrictions and biosecurity conditions

Step 3
– Allow interstate travel
– Refer to state and territories governments for border restrictions and biosecurity conditions

Australian citizens took 6.4 million overseas travel trips last year but the coronavirus has confined those trips to domestic and intrastate travel for now.

While there are still border closures for Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory. New South Wales, Victoria, and the Australian Capital Territory have remained open to each other throughout the pandemic.

NSW will be lifting holiday travel restrictions from June 1 meaning you can travel anywhere within the state. Also welcoming visitors from all across the country in the hope to revive the tourism sector.

If you are a NSW resident:
– You can visit anywhere in regional NSW for recreation or holiday purposes
– Some caravan parks and camping grounds will reopen
– You can visit national parks but should check the latest COVID-19 updates from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services website
– Continue practicing physical distancing and good hygiene

Travellers from interstate:
– You are allowed to travel to NSW for leisure
– You must follow the rules of your home state or territory when returning
